Kathy and I (Jim) moved from the warmth of Southern California to Central Illinois in the mid-1980’s. It was at this time we first tried the incredible taste of Frozen Custard. After a terrible winter Kathy and I took our three children Jessica, Michael and Jennifer back to the warmth of Southern California.

If there was one thing that we missed (besides the great friends we made), it was the great taste of Frozen Custard. Kathy would often comment about how California really needed Frozen Custard.

After one of Michael’s football games at Fred Kelly Stadium Kathy pointed to a storefront and said, “This would be a perfect place for Frozen Custard!” Well talk is cheap and it was time to see how we could bring Frozen Custard to Southern California.

I never really thought seriously about it until I began to look for ways to get out of my current career to be able to become a full-time pastor. I went back to school a few years ago and got my degree from Talbot Seminary, but knew I would not be able to support my family or pay for medical insurance as a pastor.

At this point the idea of opening a frozen custard store fell seriously on our plate. Doors were opened and we as as family felt lead to begin this store. We joked about naming the store Big J's because of the amount of "J" (Jim Jessica, and Jennifer)names in our family. When we took into consideration the reason and purpose for the store we decided that Big J's was the right name not because of our names but instead the "J" stands for Jesus.

It is our prayer that our store and service would be a blessing in your life. We want the atmosphere within our doors to be a pleasant, relaxing, and enjoyable one. Please let us know if there is anything more we can do to help enlighten your experience.

The theme within our store is a vintage beach atmosphere. We came up with this idea because we felt we sould put a California face on the Mid-West product but we did not want to use the played-out California Beach theme. So we decided with some beach photos from the 40s, 50s, and 60s we could take you back in time and construct a laid back environment. And that is where our slogan comes from. Our store scheme brings you back in time and our frozen custard brings you back for more. Therefore: "The Taste Brings You Back!!"
